About

Elizabeth Hendrick is a multi-award-winning British author and LGBTQ+ campaigner based in Tokyo. Her hard-hitting, candid memoir, Exodai, lifts the lid on the city’s shocking BDSM underworld and reveals how Elizabeth herself was inducted into the Japanese fetish scene. It was, in Elizabeth’s words, a “descent into hell”. The memoir chronicles her struggles with sexuality and explains how she eventually learnt to love herself again. It is a true story that has and continues to inspire and support those who were ostracised during adolescence and whose lack of self-love is sabotaging their adult lives. The book has won awards at the National Indie Excellence Awards and at the Next Generation Indie Awards.
Born and raised in East Anglia, Elizabeth graduated in mathematics from Durham University before a career in financial services in London. After stints as an entrepreneur – which led to an appearance on Tycoon, the TV reality show with Dragon’s Den star Peter Jones – she went on to work in Paris and Dubai before joining a major Japanese firm.
Outside of writing, Elizabeth is an active daredevil who hang-glides (she was once knocked unconscious and came round speaking fluent French), cliff jumps, and hikes Japan’s mountains.
She remains a passionate advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, self-acceptance, and the destigmatisation of alternative lifestyles. She also campaigns against the harmful rhetoric perpetuated by some religious communities regarding LGBTQ+ identities and advocates for the reconciliation of faith and sexual orientation.
