Ed Accura is known internationally as the co-founder of the Black Swimming Association (BSA), a non-profit organisation driving diversity and inclusion in aquatics through research, education, and advocacy. Under his leadership, the BSA was named the 2022 National Lottery UK Project of the Year for its pioneering work in drowning prevention and water safety education. Ed Accura is a prominent British producer, filmmaker, recording artist, author, and podcaster known for his advocacy through creative projects. Raised in London and Ghana, his music career began in the avant-garde scene before transitioning to hip-hop in the 1990s, where he founded 617 Crew and Accura Records. His work increasingly focused on social issues, including homelessness, kindness, and the lack of diversity in swimming.

As the co-founder of the Black Swimming Association (BSA), Ed is dedicated to increasing diversity in aquatics through education, research, and advocacy. He is also the creator of the acclaimed documentary series Blacks Can’t Swim, which was released on platforms such as Amazon Prime, SKY, Apple TV, and Google Play. The series aims to encourage more people from African, Caribbean, and Asian backgrounds to learn to swim, and attracted global media attention.

Through his podcast Why We Don’t Talk About SWIM, Ed continues to challenge stereotypes and address aquatic issues within minority communities, working toward a more inclusive and diverse swimming culture.

His latest documentary series, Changing the Narrative, explores the extremely limited participation of African, Caribbean, and Asian communities in aquatics will premiere. The series’ premiere is intentionally timed to coincide with Black History Month. All episodes will be released on Ed’s YouTube channel and will air weekly throughout October 2024. Most recently, he launched NO Lifeguard, a national public-safety campaign and accompanying record highlighting the dangers of swimming without supervision and reinforcing the importance of only swimming in lifeguarded areas.
